Who are the forest stewardship council® (Fsc)?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit that promotes responsible management of the world’s forests. It was founded over 25 years ago and has held firm its overall mission ever since. The FSC has based its global strategy on four goals:

  1. Advancing responsible forest management around the world.
  2. Ensuring equitable access to the benefits of FSC systems.
  3. Ensuring the integrity, credibility, and transparency of the FSC system.
  4. Creating business value for products from FSC certified forests.

The activities that the FSC run to promote these goals are managed internally. They do so through its various divisions to ensure that equal diligence extends across the breadth of its far-reaching mission. Forests managed to their standards offer benefits to both local and wide communities. These benefits include vital improvements, such as cleaner air and water, and a contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change.

Directly or indirectly, the FSC also has to deal with grander issues, such as illegal logging, deforestation, wildlife protection, and global warming. Since their inception, reports have shown that their work is yielding positive results on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation, and ushering genuine political change.

The History of the FSC

With accelerating deforesting, environmental degradation, and social exclusion on the rise in the early nineties, action needed to be taken. A group of related individuals, such as timber users, traders, and representatives of environmental and human rights organisations, took notice. This diverse team worked together to highlight the need for a system that could credibly identify well-managed forests as a source of responsibly produced wood products. Working together, in agreement across ten countries, an assembly was held in Canada in 1993. This was the moment the Forest Stewardship Council was founded.

Since then, the FSC has issued over 1400 Forest Management certificates to small enterprises and farmers associations. On top of that, they’ve overseen and issued well over 30,000 Chain of Custody Certificates to partner businesses.
